Our Story

Breakell Racing was established at the turn of the century, starting as a father and son combination of Geoffrey and James Breakell competing in UK club motorsport championships.

Geoffrey mentored and coached James through his early years, starting out on track days and BRDC member days before contesting his first races in the year 2000 behind the wheel of a 1970’s Alfa Romeo Guilia Super. Entries into the Centurion Challenge and Tin Top Classic Series followed.

James moved up to the MG Metro Cup run by the MGCC in 2003, with his weapon of choice being an MG Metro with a 1275cc A series engine and hydrostatic suspension. He enjoyed some great results in the championship, with a class podium in almost every race and the 2003 Winter Class ‘A’ champion honours at a wet and cold Mallory Park for the Metro Winter Championship.

“I remember those early years like it was yesterday. What a laugh we had. At the time I was studying for my Motorsport Engineering degree which took up most of my time during the week. At a weekend Dad and I would chuck the Alfa or the Metro on the Trailer, hook it up to his 5 Series BMW and off we would go. It was great fun, and proper racing. Real grassroots stuff.”

In 2005, the team started their long-standing association with Radical Sportscars. First of all James raced an early SR3 Supersport in the Radical Endurance Championship, and then into the Biduro Championship in an SR4. In between that, he also contested his first 24-hour endurance race as he joined the Britcar grid in a Honda Integra DC5.

“What a steep learning curve it was jumping out of a Metro and into a Radical. I remember the first few trackdays and races in that first year. I think I must have explored every track limit and beyond on nearly all the circuits we visited. Great fun though and soon got the hang of it with a bit of practice. The speed of those cars is unreal.”

James’ Radical journey continued right the way through to 2014 with a Radical PR6. This was by far the most successful car the team has raced with, securing plenty of podium finishes in the Radical Clubman Cup and 750 Motor Club Bikesports Championship – with James winning the 2012 Bikesports title having finished runner-up in each of the last two seasons.

Following this success and after several enquiries for our setup and preparation services, the decision was made to start trading as a limited company and run people’s cars for them. The idea of providing Radical race car hire soon took off, with three SR3’s hired out in UK championships by 2018.

In 2017 and 2018 the team ran four Radicals in the Birkett 6-hour relay race and finished second overall on both occasions, before success finally came their way in 2019 as they secured the fantastic achievement of finishing first and third with two of their cars.

Alongside this racing in the UK, the team started making regular trips to the Nurburgring to compete in the VLN championship. James himself has raced in VLN in various cars including BMW Z4, 325s and 330s, plus an Opel OPC Cup and VW Golf GTi Cup and TCR cars, with the experience gained benefitting the team as they continue to race on the Nordschleife to present day.

In 2020, the team expanded their prototype offering as they became an official factory team and build partner for Revolution Race Cars. Despite the difficulities of the COVID 19 pandemic, three of the first 15 cars in existence were built in their Clitheroe based workshop and a successful testing programme was completed.

That led in to a hugely successful 2020 season with professional drivers Alex Kapadia and Morten Dons, who went on to record a one-two finish in the championship for the team. Amongst the success through the season was a memorable win in the Formula 1 support race at Autódromo International do Algarve in Portugal.

Breakell Racing further expanded their race offering the follow year as they joined Ginetta racing for the first time, with entries into the Juniors, GT5 Challenge and GT4 SuperCup during the 2021 season – a move that brought the team onto the support packages for BTCC and British GT.

A fantastic 2022 campaign saw the team make history as Wes Pearce became the first Am class driver to win a race outright in the GT4 SuperCup on his way to the championship’s G56 Am title. The latest chapter with Ginetta comes in the new-for-2023 GT Championship.

2022 also brought a return to Radical racing with multiple race wins in the Radical Challenge and a milestone moment for the team with the acquisition of a Mercedes-AMG GT4, introducing the team to top-level GT4 racing for the first time with outings in the British Endurance Championship (BEC) and P9 Challenge.

The team grew their presence in GT4 racing in 2023, scoring multiple podium finishes across a full BEC campaign and securing class silverware in a maiden season in the Porsche Sprint Challenge GB. As well as once again contesting the NLS and Nürburgring 24 Hours, their most successful programme came in the Ginetta GT Championship with a stunning record of 12 race wins and 35 podium finishes.

In 2024, the team are making their long-awaited debut in the British GT Championship with their Mercedes-AMG GT4, alongside an expanded entry in the Porsche Sprint Challenge GB and another entry into the Nürburgring 24 Hours. After making their debut in the Masters Endurance Legends last year with a Morgan-Nissan LMP2, they return to the series to contest some of the biggest historic festivals in the UK and Europe.

Looking to the future, the team is aiming to continue its impressive growth and firmly establish itself as a leading GT and prototype racing team across the UK and Europe, as well as expanding its young driver development programme that currently supports Harley Haughton and previously backed Aqil Alibhai in Ginetta Juniors.

HOW IT STARTED

Breakell Racing has been involved in motor sport for many years. It all started with Geoff Breakell as a young racing driver in the 1950's in sports car racing with his ex-Tommy Sopwith Lotus 11 and moving on to a Lotus 15. A couple of seasons during this era were also spent driving a Lotus 20 single seater. The 1960's saw Geoff racing Formula Junior’s and doing more sports car racing with a Lotus 23B and then progressing to a Brabham BT8 of ex formula one champion Denny Hulme, in some international championships. The success over these two decades gained Geoff entry to British Racing Drivers Club where in later years he would be made a life member.

In the late 1960's Geoff drove an Alfa Romeo GTA. First race was the TT European Saloon Car Championship Race at Oulton Park, then raced this car at Zandvoort, Holland, Nurburgring (original circuit) Germany, 2nd in class in British Saloon Car Championship Race at Motor Show 200 Race Meeting Brands Hatch and outright winner of 2 hour Endurance Race at Snetterton. Geoff went on to race a Chevron B8 in yet more sports car racing series' both nationally and internationally In 1968/69. In the 1980's Geoff moved into club racing and took part in a few series' with various cars until in the late 80's and early 90's he competed in championships including the Mazda MX5 UK Cup and the Centurion Challenge with the same car.

Geoff then moved to Classic and Historic Rallying competing with an Alfa Gulia and Jaguar MK2.
